Pharmacogenetic Testing
Every Body is Different.
What Testing Tells Us
Pharmacogenetic testing analyzes how an individual's unique genetic makeup might influence their response to specific medications. The results can act as data points to help guide psychiatric medication choices.
This can lead to more personalized and effective treatment plans, potentially minimizing trial-and-error medication adjustments and optimizing medication outcomes.
The Testing Process
I perform genetic testing on site (using a cheek swab) and work with a company called “Genesight” which provides results in 7-10 business days. We will go over your results at the next appointment.
How Pharmacogenetic Testing Works in Psychiatry
Understand how your body metabolizes medication. Genetic testing analyzes genes that play a role in how the body metabolizes medications (pharmacokinetics) and how medications interact with the brain (pharmacodynamics).
Identify potential interactions. This information helps identify potential interactions between an individual's genetic profile and specific medications, indicating whether a medication might be less effective or more likely to cause side effects.
Make more informed decisions. By understanding an individual's genetic response to different medications, healthcare providers can make more informed decisions about medication selection, dosage, and potential interactions.
